Netscape 1.0

We get asked this quite a lot – we occasionally get queries about how Lamplight is working which arise as a result of the browser that an organisation is using.

Lamplight is compatible with Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer 8 and above. However, while many browsers are self-updating, others are not and in some cases they have been set so that they do not update automatically. For example, you need to be pro-active about updating Internet Explorer.

We recommend that Lamplight customers ensure that – as a matter of course – they are using the most up-to-date versions of their preferred web-browser. This will ensure that Lamplight functions at its optimum level. However, it is also important for other reasons.

One of the biggest concerns that organisations have about their data is that it is secure. The most up-to-date version of a browser ensures greater protection against malicious attack – where a security issue has arisen with an old version, the newer version will ensure that that threat is removed.

The browser will also be faster and is more likely to be compatible with current programming practices which means you get more out of the sites you visit.

So while an older version of a browser may be familiar to your staff, the risks and disadvantages to using it will be significant. Have a look and see what version of your browser you are using (you can usually find this with the help menu in the About option in your web browser) and whether there is a more up-to-date version.

At the time of writing the most up-to-date versions of the most common browsers are:

Firefox 20.0

Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m

Internet Explorer 9 (or 10 if your computer has Windows 7 Pack 1)

Safari 6

Opera 12.15

All browsers can be downloaded free of charge.

Warning: There are number of sites out there which look like the right place to download your browser. However, they will try to install malware or spyware onto your computer. If there are a lot of pop-ups asking if you accept terms and conditions for anything other than the browser you are downloading then you have gone to the wrong page. The browser companies will not try to install anything other than your chosen browser to your computer.
