Big Hearts, Big Impact: Parent, Child and Family Support

A family of 6 - Mum, Dad and 4 children, holding hands facing the sun.

Here are some recent stories that we’ve seen from the sector.

Football Meets Family Care

Manchester City isn’t just about goals and trophies—they’re scoring big for families too! Their charity, City in the Community, launched a year-round programme at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. It’s all about boosting physical and mental wellbeing, plus education and skills for patients, siblings, parents, and carers.

A Break That Changes Everything

For parent carers in Scotland, the Take a Break grant is making having a break possible. Last year, £1.5 million funded 4,223 grants—giving families time to recharge. The results speak volumes:

  • 96% said the break boosted their health and wellbeing.
  • 92% enjoyed activities with their kids they couldn’t normally afford.
  • 83% felt more able to balance caring with everyday life.

Young Carers on the rise

A recent Opinium study revealed something heartbreaking: nearly half of young carers spend 3–4 hours a day looking after loved ones. That means less time for homework, friends, and hobbies. Many miss a month of school each year and struggle with stress and sleep.

Dads Matter is going National

Home-Start UK is making sure dads don’t get left behind. With a £1 million grant, their Dad Matters programme is going nationwide. Plus, they’re teaming up with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to share resources on early brain development—because strong relationships start early.

The Cost of Christmas

Christmas should be magical, but for many families, it’s stressful. Family Action shows the harsh reality many face:

  • 55% can’t afford presents for someone.
  • 1 in 6 can’t buy a gift for their own child.
  • 32% say their children are worried about the cost of Christmas and family finances.
  • 31% have made up a story to explain why a gift didn’t arrive; to avoid admitting they couldn’t afford it.

Charities like Family Action and the Salvation Army run toy appeals to bring joy where it’s needed most. A small donation can make a big difference.

Therapy Dogs: Paws for Thought

Here’s a feel-good story to end on: a London project is using therapy dogs in schools to boost mental health and engagement. There’s been numerous counts of kids feeling calmer, more confident, and even seeing improvements in literacy by reading to the dogs. Sometimes, a good therapy has four legs and a wagging tail.
