Recent Developments in LGBTQ+ Community Support

The LGBTQ+ charity sector continues to make a meaningful difference in communities across the UK, with new mentoring programmes, support services and initiatives helping people feel safer, more connected and better supported. Here are just a couple of the recent updates highlighting the important work taking place.

Building Future LGBTQ+ Mentors in Hertfordshire

A new mentoring programme in Hertfordshire is helping members of the LGBTQ+ community develop the skills and confidence needed to support others.

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and Hertsmere Borough Council, not-for-profit organisation Impactful Governance has trained eight LGBTQ+ individuals to become mentors. The programme aims to create a network of trained community members who can offer guidance and support to others facing challenges.

The need for these services remains significant. Impactful Governance has reported increasing referrals, including people experiencing the effects of hate crime and those requiring support after mental health crises. By equipping people with mentoring skills, the organisation hopes to strengthen community support and create lasting positive change.

Recruitment is already underway for next year’s course, giving more people the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification while supporting others within the community.

New Funding for LGBTQ+ Hate Crime Victims

Support for victims of LGBTQ+ hate crime has received a welcome boost thanks to new funding awarded to Hart Gables.

The charity, which supports LGBTQ+ people across Teesside and East Durham, has received £12,384 from Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey for its Thrive Beyond Hate project. The funding will help provide both one-to-one and group support sessions for those affected by hate crime.

Hart Gables says many LGBTQ+ people continue to face threats, intimidation, online abuse and discriminatory behaviour. The project is designed to offer practical assistance, emotional support and opportunities to connect with others who have had similar experiences.

There is also hope that increased support will encourage more victims to report incidents, helping authorities better understand where help is needed and improving access to services for those affected.

Breaking Barriers in the Farming Community

In Yorkshire, one charity is helping to promote greater visibility and inclusion within rural communities.

Out Together, an LGBTQ+ charity established in 2020, recently made history by becoming the first LGBTQ+ organisation to host a stand at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

The charity was founded using funding left by North Yorkshire farmer Mike Potter, who did not come out until he was 72. His story continues to inspire the organisation’s mission to reduce social isolation and loneliness, particularly among older LGBTQ+ people and those living in rural and farming communities.

The Great Yorkshire Show’s decision to welcome Out Together reflects growing recognition that LGBTQ+ people are an important part of farming and countryside life. The charity hopes its presence at such a major agricultural event will help break down barriers and create greater acceptance across rural communities.

A Sector Making a Difference

While challenges remain, these stories demonstrate the vital role LGBTQ+ charities play in supporting individuals, tackling isolation and improving wellbeing across the UK.

Whether through mentoring programmes, hate crime support services or initiatives that promote visibility in traditionally underrepresented communities, organisations continue to create safe spaces where people can feel heard, valued and supported.

As these projects grow, they offer hope that more LGBTQ+ people will be able to access the support, understanding and opportunities they need to thrive.
